A scandalous lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jay-Z, which alleged the rape of a 13-year-old girl in 2000, has been formally dismissed as of Friday, according to recent court filings in New York. The case's anonymous plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, has voluntarily withdrawn her claim, marking a significant turn in the ongoing allegations against the two entertainment moguls.
The withdrawal was executed by attorney Tony Buzbee, representing numerous plaintiffs in sexual misconduct lawsuits against Mr. Combs. Court records indicate that the case was dismissed "with prejudice," meaning it cannot be refiled in its original form.
Jay-Z, also known as Shawn Carter and the founder of Roc Nation, responded to the dismissal with a statement celebrating it as a "victory." He termed the accusations "frivolous" and "appalling," asserting that the civil suit lacked any merit and had no potential for success. "The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims," said Jay-Z, who noted the emotional toll the experience had on his family.
Jay-Z's attorney, Alex Spiro, reinforced this perspective by stating that the case "never should have been brought" and praised Jay-Z for confronting the allegations without resorting to a settlement. He highlighted the injustices faced by the celebrities when accusations arise without substantial evidence.
Initially, Jane Doe filed her lawsuit against Mr. Combs in October 2022 and subsequently included Jay-Z in December, alleging both had assaulted her following an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty. However, her credibility came into question after she admitted in a December interview that "not all the facts are clear" and that she might have made mistakes in identifying her assailants.
As the case evolved, Jay-Z sought its dismissal citing inconsistencies in the accuser's testimony. The request was approved by United States District Judge Analisa Torres leading to the lawsuit's dismissal.
While Jay-Z is now free from the lawsuit, Mr. Combs is still entangled in multiple civil suits. Following the dismissal, Combs’ legal team asserted his innocence, claiming that the recent dismissal was just one of many cases that would ultimately falter due to insufficient evidence and meritlessness.
Combs remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since September 2024 on federal criminal charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, awaiting trial, which is scheduled for May 5, 2025.
