Julio César Chávez Jr. Faces Arrest Warrant Amid Controversy
Mexican boxing star Julio César Chávez Jr. is in the spotlight after a U.S. immigration detention and an arrest warrant issued in Mexico.
Mexican authorities announced on Thursday the issuance of an arrest warrant for renowned boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., amidst allegations of organized crime and arms trafficking. This news comes just a day after he was detained by U.S. immigration officials in California, following a loss to ex-YouTube star Jake Paul in a widely publicized boxing match.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Chávez was arrested under allegations of entering the United States illegally and purportedly has ties to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. Officials noted that a warrant for Chávez had been previously filed in Mexico in March of 2023.
Following his detention at Studio City, California, Mexican officials were promptly informed, with an extradition process now underway. The 39-year-old boxer had initially entered the U.S. with a valid B2 tourist visa in 2023; however, it expired in 2024.
Legal representatives for Chávez have yet to comment on the situation. Chávez Jr. is well-known as a former World Boxing Council middleweight champion, and he carries the legacy of his father, Julio César Chávez Sr., a celebrated figure in the boxing community. U.S. officials allege Chávez is linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, claiming that his wife has past connections to El Chapo's lineage.
