Tragic Israeli Airstrike Targets Gaza School, Reports Claim 27 Lives Lost
An Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced families in Gaza City results in at least 27 deaths, including children, according to local health authorities.
At least 27 Palestinians have reportedly lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike on the Dar al-Arqam school in Gaza City, which was being used as a shelter for families displaced by conflict, as stated by the Hamas-run health ministry. In addition to the fatalities, numerous individuals were wounded when the airstrike struck the northeastern Tuffah district of the city.
The Israeli military, however, claimed that the strike targeted a Hamas command and control center and did not specifically mention the school in their account of the operation. The situation in Gaza has been dire; over the previous 24 hours, health officials reported another 97 casualties due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes as Israel's ground offensive sought to capture significant portions of Palestinian territory.
Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defence agency, confirmed that among the deceased were women and children, including a heavily pregnant woman still unaccounted for alongside her family. Disturbing footage from al-Ahli hospital depicted harrowing scenes with injured children being carried in for urgent medical care.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed to have struck a site used by Hamas for planning attacks against Israeli civilians. They emphasized their efforts to minimize civilian casualties during this offensive, which has seen a significant increase in violent encounters.
Further complicating the situation, at least 12 more individuals were killed overnight in strikes across homes in Gaza City's Shejaiya district. Witnesses recounted the chaos following the explosions, which led to panic as residents fled their homes amidst the escalating violence.
The IDF recently issued evacuation orders to several areas, including Shejaiya, encouraging residents to move to western Gaza City due to the intensified military operations. An estimated 100,000 Palestinians have been displaced by this ongoing conflict in recent days, according to the UN.
The resurgence of hostilities marks a return to aerial bombardments and ground assaults that had been temporarily halted during a ceasefire in January. The IDF intensified its operations as tensions regarding hostage negotiations with Hamas grew, with calls for military pressure to compel the group to release hostages they still hold.
In parallel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that efforts were underway to establish new military corridors, potentially isolating various regions within Gaza. Hamas has countered, dismissing new ceasefire proposals coordinated with the U.S., insisting on previously negotiated terms involving an extended truce in exchange for the release of hostages.
As the conflict grinds on, the humanitarian situation has escalated dramatically, with reports indicating that over 50,520 individuals have died since the violence erupted earlier this month, leading to widespread concerns over civilian lives lost in the crossfire.
