Even as the United States and China have implemented steps to alleviate their trade dispute, Beijing is strategically positioning itself for a sustained rivalry with Washington. This involves seeking economic and diplomatic avenues throughout Asia while maintaining a firm stance on its territorial aspirations and military competitiveness.

Remote agreements to pause steep tariffs will not settle the myriad issues that Beijing harbors against the U.S., particularly concerning the Pentagon's intention to deploy military resources to the Asia-Pacific and ongoing restrictions on China's access to high-level technologies. Although this truce may facilitate high-level discussions, including a potential summit between President Trump and Xi Jinping, uncertainty looms over the discussions.

The approach to tariffs is likely viewed by Beijing as a tactical surrender from the US rather than a genuine pivot away from confrontation with the Chinese Communist Party.
