**Kashmir Faces Severe Heatwave Threatening Health and Agriculture**

Kashmir battles record heat and erratic weather, endangering farmers' livelihoods and public health.

In the picturesque region of Kashmir, rising temperatures and diminishing rainfall have led to a health and agricultural crisis, prompting urgent calls for immediate climate action.

The picturesque valleys of Kashmir, known for their temperate climate, are currently grappling with an unprecedented heatwave that has resulted in alarming conditions for both the health of residents and agricultural productivity. Zaina Begum, a farmer from Pulwama district, has seen her paddy crops wilt under the oppressive sun, with hopes for recovery dashed by delayed rainfall. "We are facing the worst possible situation," she lamented, having not harvested a healthy crop in five years.

This summer, the region recorded its highest temperature in seven decades, peaking at 37.4°C (99.32°F), significantly above the seasonal average. The effects of this unrelenting heat have rippled through the community, prompting school closures and warnings of more extreme weather on the horizon.

Although recent rains have provided temporary relief, experts emphasize this is unlikely to alleviate the broader crisis, as erratic weather patterns continue to threaten those who rely on farming to sustain their livelihoods. Many farmers, like Begum's family, have progressively shifted their focus from water-intensive crops like rice to other options, only to find that none are immune to the hot weather's effects.

Agricultural expert Mukhtar Ahmad highlights the consequences of three heatwaves occurring within a single season, which have led to further drying of rivers and increasing crop failures. The changing climate patterns, documented in studies showing an average temperature increase of 0.5°C per decade, suggest that both winter snow and summer rains are becoming ever more unreliable.

Residents are also feeling the severe impacts of these soaring temperatures. Local man Parveez Ahmad recently faced a medical emergency attributed to extreme heat, with doctors warning of the dangers posed by the conditions.

Environmentalists point to the ongoing climate crisis, as the shifting weather patterns and rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt, threatening water supply and agriculture in the region. Professor Jasia Bashir from the Islamic University of Science and Technology notes that while Kashmir contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it is suffering the repercussions of climate change disproportionately.

Rapid urbanization and deforestation have further exacerbated climate vulnerabilities, as vast areas of greenery have been replaced with concrete structures, intensifying the pressing issue of heat retention. Criticisms have emerged regarding insufficient governmental focus on climate action, despite the grave risks faced by farmers and the community at large.

While local officials assert they are prioritizing the addressing of climate challenges, farmers like Ms. Begum demand immediate action to avert impending disaster. "We need urgent solutions, or we will be left with nothing," she said, echoing the sentiments of many in the valley who are desperately seeking relief from the searing heat and unstable agricultural environment.
