Pope Leo XIV Issues Strong Call for Global Peace in Inaugural Sunday Blessing

In his first Sunday address since becoming Pope, Leo XIV urges world leaders to end conflicts as he reflects on historical tragedies.

In a heartfelt inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV passionately called for an end to global conflicts, emphasizing the need for peace and reflection upon historical tragedies during his first Sunday blessing at St. Peter's Square.

Pope Leo XIV returned to St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, addressing thousands of devoted followers in his inaugural Sunday blessing as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. His message echoed calls for peace, resonating strongly with the crowd.

"Never again war," Leo declared emphatically, addressing the world's powerful leaders during a day marking nearly 80 years since the end of World War II. The pontiff referenced his predecessor, Pope Francis, who frequently warned of the ongoing violence in the world as akin to "a third world war in pieces."

He expressed a profound concern for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, advocating for a just and lasting peace, the release of all prisoners, and the return of Ukrainian children separated from their families amidst the war. His comments come as many Ukrainian children have been taken to Russia against their family's will during the ongoing conflict.

In addition to the situation in Ukraine, Leo XIV called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, urging that humanitarian aid be allowed to reach the suffering civilian population and advocating for the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the recent outbreak of violence in Israel.

His appeal for peace encompassed the global struggles that Pope Francis often spoke about, stressing an urgency for unity and care for the world's most vulnerable populations. As families in Italy, the United States, and beyond celebrated Mother's Day, Leo extended heartfelt greetings to mothers, acknowledging their sacrifices and roles.

It was also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, and the Pope prayed for an increase in commitments to priesthood and religious life, acknowledging the declining numbers in many parts of the world. "The Church has such a great need for them!" he stated passionately.

Among those present in the square was Candice Dias from California, who remarked on Leo's humility and relatability. “He seems to be very down to earth,” she said, highlighting the warm reception he received on his first Sunday as pope.

Leo XIV has been actively engaging since his election, having celebrated his first Mass in the Sistine Chapel with the cardinals who elected him and indicating his intentions to continue fostering a missionary direction for the Church, bringing it closer to marginalized communities.

As preparations for Vatican tours continue, the anticipation surrounding Leo XIV's papacy grows, with many hoping for fresh perspectives and renewed commitments to peace and unity in a time of global unrest.
