Deadly Attack on Migrant Facility in Yemen Claims Lives of Dozens
A U.S. military strike on a migrant center in Yemen leads to a tragic loss of life, inciting outrage from Houthi officials.
Dozens of individuals lost their lives in a devastating attack on a facility for migrants in Houthi-controlled northern Yemen on Monday, according to reports from the Iran-backed militant group and humanitarian agencies. The Houthis alleged that an American airstrike targeted what they described as a center for migrants in Saada, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 African migrants, a claim that the U.S. military has not yet addressed.
This incident occurred shortly after the American military announced over 800 airstrikes in Yemen since mid-March, focusing on Houthi military infrastructure. While the Pentagon emphasized targeting military assets and did not reference civilian casualties, the Houthis condemned the bombing as a “heinous crime against African migrants,” asserting that it has resulted in more than 100 civilian fatalities.
As the two sides trade accusations regarding the civilian toll, the U.S. Central Command previously stated that an earlier explosion, which killed 12 in Yemen’s capital, was due to a misfired Houthi missile rather than a U.S. strike, contradicting Houthi claims. Following the recent assault, graphic images aired by Houthi-controlled media depicted lifeless bodies among debris in Saada, with officials confirming a minimum of 40 injuries as well.
Each year, tens of thousands of African migrants undertake the perilous crossing from the Horn of Africa to Yemen, hoping to find opportunities in the richer Gulf States, with nearly 60,900 arrivals noted in Yemen in 2024 alone by the International Organization for Migration.
In a backdrop of escalating conflict, the Houthis have intensified their military operations, launching attacks toward Israel and vessels in the Red Sea, asserting such actions as expressions of solidarity with Palestinians. The U.S. military intervention, which has ramped up since mid-March, reflects a commitment from President Trump to continue operations against the Houthis until they cease to pose a threat.
