Recent research led by Spanish scientists has provided new insights into the origins of famed explorer Christopher Columbus, proposing that he was likely Spanish and Jewish. This contradicts the traditional belief that Columbus was Italian from Genoa. The study suggests that Columbus was probably born in western Europe, possibly in Valencia, and that he may have concealed his Jewish heritage or converted to Catholicism to avoid religious persecution. The research, ongoing since 2003, involved DNA analysis from Columbus and his relatives, comparing it with historical figures to solve this historical mystery. Prior to this study, it was widely accepted that Columbus was born to a family of wool weavers in Genoa. However, the latest findings suggest he lived in Spain and concealed his Jewish background amidst the religious expulsions of 1492. This announcement was made during the airing of "Columbus DNA: His True Origin" on Spain's RTVE, coinciding with Spain's National Day, which commemorates Columbus's arrival in the Americas.
