In brief

A Florida man has been charged with attempted murder after he mistakenly shot two Israeli tourists, attributing his actions to a severe mental health crisis amid escalating violence related to identity conflicts.

A 27-year-old man from Florida, Mordechai Brafman, was charged with attempted murder after a concerning incident in Miami Beach where he shot at two tourists whom he believed were Palestinian. The assailant, Brafman, claims the shooting resulted from a severe mental health episode. According to police reports, he exited his truck and fired at the two individuals, believing they were of a different ethnicity.Fortunately, the victims turned out to be Israeli Jews, and neither suffered serious injuries. Brafman, who is also Jewish, now faces two counts of second-degree attempted murder in what has been deemed identity-related violence—an issue that has seen alarming increases since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, along with the consequential military actions taken against Gaza. His attorney, Dustin Tischler, noted that Brafman appeared before a judge this past Tuesday and is currently held in jail, awaiting his next hearing, having been denied bond. Tischler emphasized that his client did not have any previous incidents of violence or hateful behavior and is cooperating with law enforcement. Brafman reportedly recognized the gravity of his charges but claimed a lack of control over his actions at the moment of the shooting.
