In brief
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. takes a stand against alleged plots while tightening security measures amid growing political unrest.
In a striking address on Monday, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reacted to alarming claims made by Vice President Sara Duterte regarding an assassination plot. Days after Duterte intimated that she had arranged for an assassin to kill Marcos if she faced peril, the president expressed his concern over threats against his life and others in leadership. In his video statement, Marcos condemned a wave of “reckless profanities and threats,” although he refrained from directly naming Duterte. “If it is so easy to threaten the life of a president, how much more for ordinary citizens? Such criminal intent should never be tolerated. I will not take this sitting down,” he declared. Following Duterte's controversial remarks during a virtual briefing, which she asserted had been “maliciously taken out of logical context,” there has been a visible shift in security protocols surrounding the president. Enhanced measures were put into place just days after the revelation of the alleged assassination plot, which includes not only Marcos but also his wife and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, a family member. In response to the unfolding drama, the Department of Justice announced it would issue a subpoena to Duterte, demanding an explanation within five days concerning her allegations. Jesse Andres, the under secretary for the Department of Justice, emphasized serious legal consequences for what he termed the "premeditated plot" declared by Duterte. As the political climate intensifies, both the threats and the responses have highlighted a fraught atmosphere in Philippine politics, marking a significant moment in the intricate dynamics between the president and his vice president.
