In brief

Siblings Mish and Lucy take a break from their enclosure for a honey-filled escapade, leaving sanctuary staff on alert.

Mish and Lucy, two playful European brown bear siblings, recently surprised everyone at a wildlife sanctuary in Devon, England, when they managed to escape their enclosure. The adventurous duo, both aged five, took advantage of the spring weather to venture out and embark on a sweet escapade that had staff both amused and alert. On a typical afternoon, mishandled food storage led Mish and Lucy to a stash of honey, which they promptly devoured in a scene reminiscent of “Winnie the Pooh.” Sanctuary director Mark Habben received an unexpected call that triggered a “code red” alert at the sanctuary, prompting immediate safety protocols. Habben, who was working at a different location about four hours away, initially thought it might be a training drill before realizing the gravity of the situation. The sanctuary staff quickly secured the safety of the 16 visitors on-site by ushering them into a play barn. Fortunately, the bears were contained away from the public area, ensuring no one was ever in danger during the escapade. After about an hour of indulging in their honey feast, the sibling bears were safely returned to their enclosure, leaving staff with a memorable story and a lesson about secure food storage. This bear escapade has reinvigorated discussions about wildlife management and safety protocols at sanctuaries, bringing light-heartedness and concern to the delightful antics of these curious creatures.
