Mexican army divers successfully rescued a miner, Francisco Zapata Nájera, after he spent two weeks trapped in a flooded underground tunnel. The incident occurred in a gold mine located in Sinaloa, where a dam burst caused significant flooding. Nájera had been stranded 300 meters (986 feet) below ground following the collapse.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly for over 300 hours, navigating through hazardous conditions to locate him. Remarkably, video footage captured his uplifting spirit as he stood in waist-deep water, expressing unwavering faith while awaiting rescue.
During his entrapment, Nájera was able to signal his location by turning a torchlight on and off, which ultimately guided divers to him. When they finally reached him, he was provided with water, canned tuna, and energy bars as they prepared for his extraction.
Though he appeared frail upon his rescue, doctors have reported that he is stable and will receive necessary treatment. The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, commended both the army and Zapata for their courageous efforts during the ordeal. While Zapata's rescue was a moment of joy, the search continues for one additional miner who remains unaccounted for.
