Austin Appelbee, a 13-year-old Australian boy, has been hailed for his incredible bravery after swimming for hours to save his family who were stranded at sea. In an emotional interview, Austin that he didn’t consider himself a hero, stating, I just did what I did.


During a family day at the beach in Geographe Bay, Western Australia, tragic circumstances unfolded when strong winds drifted his mother Joanne, brother Beau, and sister Grace far from shore, where they became stuck on paddleboards. As the situation became perilous, Austin attempted to paddle back for help using a damaged kayak.


Four hours later, after abandoning the kayak and clinging to hope, Austin launched into the water. His journey back to safety was challenging, risking both his physical well-being and his courage. With faith and determination, he swam approximately four kilometers (two nautical miles), pushing through exhaustion.


Upon reaching dry land, Austin was able to alert emergency services, triggering a search and rescue operation for his family who had drifted out nearly 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) offshore. Despite extreme fatigue and anxiety over their safety, he managed to call for help just as hope was waning for his mother.


Ultimately, Austin’s family was found safe—albeit cold and exhausted—leading to a heartfelt reunion. Rescuers have praised Austin’s efforts, calling his swim superhuman. Though he returned to school on crutches due to sore legs, he remains modest about his bravery, attributing his survival to his devoted family and the swift action of the emergency responders.


The ordeal has been a life-changing experience for Austin, and he emphasized that while others may view him as heroic, he simply views it as a tough battle fought for his loved ones.
