Brazil's President Lula Hails Oil Discovery Near Amazon River

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva celebrated the discovery of oil off the mouth of the Amazon River, stating it could be a “passport to the country’s future.” The announcement came after Brazil’s state‑run oil company Petrobras revealed a sizeable oil find in the deep‑water region known as the Brazilian Equatorial Margin.

The oil was located roughly 175 km (110 miles) from the Amazon coastline, at a depth of 2,886 m (9,469 ft). While Petrobras confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons, it remains uncertain whether the field can be extracted profitably.

Environmentalists have voiced alarm that exploratory drilling in the biodiverse margin poses a risk of spills that could devastate reefs and spread to coastal wetlands. Critics also warn that the timing of the announcement—shortly before the COP30 climate conference hosted by Brazil—appears to undermine the country’s climate commitments.

Lula, who is running for a fourth term in the upcoming October elections, reiterated his pledge to transition Brazil away from fossil fuels. “I’m not denying my commitment to the fight for a day when we no longer need fossil fuels,” he said, “but oil revenues are needed to fund the transition.”

The president has repeatedly dismissed foreign criticism as “meddling,” insisting that any interference would undermine Brazilian sovereignty. He reportedly held a vial of collected oil during his press briefings, symbolizing the national significance of the find.

The news has already sparked a surge of optimism in Oiapoque, a remote town in Amapá state. Local authorities report an influx of residents seeking opportunities linked to the drilling project, raising hopes for jobs and infrastructure development.

With less than two months to the presidential election, Lula faces the challenge of winning votes for economic growth without alienating environmentalists who fear irreversible damage to one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
