California Governor Gavin Newsom Claims DOJ Investigating His Wife and Ex-Staff Amid Trump Allegations
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the United States Justice Department has been probing people close to him, including his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom and former chief of staff Dana Williamson, because of his potential presidential ambitions.
"In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the door of family, friends, and former employees," Newsom said in a video. "Not because they found crime, because they're simply trying to find one."
The investigations are said to have started in California, working through whistleblowers and government sources, and include probes over the governor’s wife’s taxes and a former chief of staff’s alleged involvement in a campaign‑finance fraud scheme.
The former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, pleaded guilty in May to charges unrelated to Newsom, but the investigation allegedly involves former staffers still under scrutiny.
Newsom suggested the probes are a result of his opposition to President Donald Trump, accusing the former president of targeting political enemies. He emphasized that "we have nothing to hide."
The DOJ has been active in investigating prominent critics of Trump in recent years, though many cases have been dropped or delayed. The White House and the Justice Department declined to comment on the governor’s claims.
