On late Sunday, the FBI's Jackson Field Office released images of the suspects, consisting of one female and three males, who authorities refer to as unknown suspects. As of now, police have disclosed little about the potential motive behind the shooting, though initial findings suggest the violence erupted from a disagreement among several individuals.
This tragedy unfolded during a vibrant homecoming celebration immediately following a local high school football game, marking the deadliest in a series of violent events across Mississippi that weekend. Additional shootings were reported at two universities during their respective homecoming events.
Leland Shooting Marks 14th Mass Killing of the Year
In Leland, four of the shooting victims died on site, leaving behind abandoned shoes and blood-stained pavement as distressing reminders of the horrific event. Witness Camish Hopkins described the scene: It was the most horrific scene I’d ever seen.
According to tracking by the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killing Database, the Leland incident is recorded as the 14th mass killing in the U.S. for the year 2025.
Separate Shooting Claims Two Lives in Heidelberg
In a separate incident, police found two bodies, including a pregnant woman, on a school campus in Heidelberg, Mississippi, the same night as the homecoming football game in the area. An 18-year-old male has since been arrested and charged with murder.
Shooting Events at Mississippi Universities
On Saturday, gunfire erupted on the campus of Alcorn State University, leaving one injured and another dead, while Jackson State University reported a juvenile shooting during tailgating activities. As of now, no arrests have been made pertaining to these events.
