During a House GOP retreat at the Kennedy Center, President Donald Trump informed members that Indiana U.S. Representative Jim Baird and his wife are recovering in the hospital following a serious car accident. Trump remarked, “They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly.” He emphasized that both Baird, 80, and his wife are expected to be fine. Baird has represented west central Indiana since being elected to Congress in 2019.
A spokesperson for Baird's congressional office did not immediately provide additional details regarding the accident. This news emerged as Republicans in Washington are also grappling with the recent death of Doug LaMalfa, a long-serving Republican representative from California, and the resignation of Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, which has further impacted the party's slim majority in the House, leaving a 218 to 213 advantage over Democrats.
In a similar vein, Indiana Republican Jackie Walorski was tragically killed in 2022 in a head-on vehicle collision in northern Indiana, an incident that also took the lives of two of her staffers and the driver of the other vehicle involved.
