Deadly Nepal‑Tibet floods: what we know
The Nepal‑Tibet border swallowed a huge wall of mud, rock and water on Wednesday, as a massive landslide triggered a flash flood that swept across several towns and mountain trails. Local officials have confirmed more than 270 deaths and over 800 missing, with many of the absent being tourists from abroad.

What caused the deadly landslide?
In the early hours, Nepali officials reported an earthquake on the border, but United States Geological Survey technicians later refuted this, stating that satellite data and seismic recordings indicated a glacial collapse and subsequent debris flow rather than seismic shaking.
Scientists say that the rapid melt of Himalayan glaciers—accelerated by warming air and shifting precipitation patterns—has weakened permafrost that once anchored mountain slopes. When thawed, these layers lose their cohesion, making the slopes prone to sudden slides.
Casualties and missing people
At least 270 people have been confirmed dead. Around 826 individuals remain missing, including more than 529 tourists, 466 of whom are foreign nationals according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Management Authority. China’s state broadcaster reports that 558 people are missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County; 260 of those are foreign, with a confirmed death toll of three.
Tourists missing by nationality: India (178), Ukraine (53), Malaysia (51), UK (33), Canada (24), USA (65), Australia (34). Those from South Korea, South Africa, Portugal, the Netherlands and New Zealand also feature in the counts.
International response
Prime Minister Rishabh Pant said Nepal would work closely with China to coordinate rescue and relief. President Xi Jinping called for an “all‑out” search effort and pledged to strengthen monitoring systems.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered humanitarian assistance. UN Secretary‑General António Guterres said UN teams were supplying relief goods and personnel to support the local effort. The United States has committed $500,000 for emergency shelter and water sanitation, while the United Kingdom pledged to aid British nationals in crisis.
Future risks
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIDMOD) warns that secondary flooding could occur as debris blocks river channels. Scientists are mapping the landslide’s extent and monitoring for potential dam‑like formations that could spark further floods.
The incident underscores the escalating threat posed by climate change in high‑mountain regions. Increased glacier melt and thawed permafrost mean that even minor weather events could lead to catastrophic landslides and flooding in the future.
