Deadly Strike on Kyiv Warehouse Prompts Evacuations

A Russian airstrike on a weapons depot located a short distance from a residential zone outside Kyiv has killed at least 37 people and prompted the evacuation of around 400 residents, Ukrainian authorities say.

The attack produced a huge explosion that sent plumes of smoke across the surrounding neighbourhood, and footage of the blast has been shared on social media by witnesses who witnessed the event firsthand.

The warehouse housed munitions that were supplied to Ukrainian forces, a fact that underscores the danger of storing explosives within reach of civilian populations. In that regard, President Volodymyr Zeliensky announced that an investigation has begun into the negligence of the warehouse operators who stored war matériel so close to people.

War correspondent Dan Johnson reports from the area, noting that the incident highlights the complex dangers faced by civilians amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
