A US judge has dismissed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, ruling that the prosecutor who brought the charges was unlawfully appointed.
Judge Cameron Currie stated that Lindsey Halligan, who was handpicked by Trump to bring the charges against Comey and James, was never eligible for her position.
Both Comey and James have asserted their innocence, labeling the prosecutions as politically motivated. In light of the ruling, the White House has responded, stating, The facts of the indictments against Comey and James have not changed and this will not be the final word on this matter.
President Donald Trump has consistently criticized Comey and James, claiming in a recent post that They're all guilty as hell while also insisting that JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!
Judge Currie's decision emphasized that Halligan, having no prior prosecutorial experience, was unauthorized to present the charges. The ruling described all actions stemming from Halligan's appointment as unlawful. Hence, the charges against Comey were dismissed without prejudice, allowing for the possibility of re-filing by the justice department.
Comey expressed relief over the outcome, referring to the prosecution as one based on malevolence and incompetence, but noted that Trump would likely renew his pursuit against him. James also welcomed the ruling, declaring herself undeterred by what she calls baseless charges.
The judgment is expected to escalate tensions as the justice department, supported by the White House, plans to appeal against the ruling, arguing Halligan's appointment was valid.
