In brief

Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel laureate and vocal critic of the Iranian government, has been granted a temporary release from prison for health recovery following a significant medical operation, highlighting ongoing concerns for prisoners’ rights in Iran.

Prosecutors in Iran have decided to permit Narges Mohammadi, a renowned activist and recent Nobel Peace Prize recipient, to leave prison for 21 days to recuperate post-surgery, her foundation reported on Wednesday. This decision comes after Mohammadi underwent a critical operation on her leg to eliminate a potentially cancerous lesion, as her deteriorating health drew urgent calls from her legal team for necessary medical attention. In response to her worsening condition, fellow inmates escalated their appeals by initiating a hunger strike, seeking justice and proper care for Mohammadi. However, the extension of her prison sentence by an additional 21 days following her temporary release has sparked controversy. The Narges Foundation lobbied for a “medical furlough,” arguing that her recovery time should count towards her sentence rather than extend it.At 52 years old, Mohammadi is currently serving time in a Tehran prison after being found guilty of “spreading anti-state propaganda” due to her consistent criticisms of the Iranian regime and its repression of women’s rights. Her health has notably declined during her imprisonment, suffering multiple heart attacks in 2022, as per her foundation’s statements. Her children received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf in 2023, further emphasizing her global recognition as a champion for human rights.
