In brief

In a dire warning, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine conveyed that the nation's survival amid ongoing conflicts with Russia hinges significantly on U.S. assistance, as tensions and concerns grew during the Munich Security Conference.

On February 14, 2025, President Zelensky remarked in a preview of an NBC interview that Ukraine would face a “low chance” of surviving the ongoing war without help from the United States. His statement was issued on the opening day of the Munich Security Conference, a platform where European diplomats awaited insights into U.S. strategies regarding peace negotiations with Russia. In a portion of the NBC “Meet the Press” interview, Zelensky emphasized the grave reality, stating: “Probably it will be very, very, very difficult... But we will have low chance — low chance to survive without support of the United States.” The full interview will be released on Sunday.During the conference, many officials looked forward to learning about U.S. plans from Vice President JD Vance, however, his remarks on Ukraine were minimal and lacking in a clear pathway for peace talks or future security arrangements in Europe. Instead, he shifted focus to domestic issues, expressing concerns about the suppression of free speech and urging nations to embrace their far-right political elements.Earlier in the week, troubling statements emerged from Trump's defense secretary, Pete Hegseth. In a meeting with NATO and Ukrainian defense officials, he noted that the U.S. wouldn’t back Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO within the frame of a peace plan, labeling a return to the pre-2014 borders — prior to Russia's annexation of Crimea — as "unrealistic."Additionally, Trump has floated an idea of leveraging American aid against Ukraine's rich deposits of critical minerals, suggesting an arrangement where Ukraine would provide equivalent resources worth $500 billion in exchange for U.S. support. The assertion that Ukraine has "essentially agreed" to such terms sparked discussions about the integrity and future of U.S.-Ukrainian relations amidst the war.
