A shallow magnitude‑4.8 earthquake rattled southern Spain on Tuesday morning. The epicenter lay roughly 10 km south of the historic city of Granada, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
Local residents fled their homes, fearing aftershocks. Several vehicles were damaged by falling debris, and museums, administrative buildings and sports centres had to close.
The quake was part of a series of very shallow tremors that began last Friday and were widely felt across the region.
The tremor hit at 10:37 local time (08:37 GMT) near Alhendín and was recorded at a depth of under 10 km.
Alfonso Malpica, a resident of Granada, described the shaking as “stronger than the ones that happen from time to time, the ones we’re used to.”
The historic Alhambra palace—an UNESCO World Heritage Site—was closed for the day for safety checks, while Granada’s metro network reduced train speeds to 30 km/h to safeguard passengers.
Impact: Three people were lightly injured, and several buildings suffered damage. Tourist operations continued to maintain safety protocols.
