Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat known for his role in President Donald Trump’s 2021 impeachment trial, has announced his candidacy for California governor.
During a lively segment on ABC’s 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on Thursday night, Swalwell expressed his vision for the state, emphasizing the need for strong leadership.
“Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector,” Swalwell stated, pledging to address economic challenges by reducing prices and boosting wages.
He did not shy away from highlighting his past confrontations with Trump, stating he is ready to “bring this fight home.”
“Our state is under attack,” Swalwell proclaimed. He criticized Trump for his handling of key issues, including public safety and climate initiatives, asserting that Trump’s policies have damaged California’s progress.
Swalwell’s announcement followed recent criticisms from Trump directed at Kimmel, which reinforced the intense political atmosphere surrounding the campaign.
Having first been elected to Congress in 2012, Swalwell previously made a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before endorsing Joe Biden.
The political landscape for the upcoming election is highly competitive, with multiple Democrats, including billionaire activist Tom Steyer, Rep. Katie Porter, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, also declaring their candidacies.
Voters can anticipate an all-party primary in June, where the top two candidates will proceed to the general election in November.
