Poland unveiled a 55.6‑metre concrete statue of the Virgin Mary in Konotopie, surpassing Rio’s Christ the Redeemer and sparking debate over the Catholic Church’s influence.

A 55.6‑metre (182‑foot) concrete monument of the Virgin Mary was officially unveiled in the rural village of Konotopie, Poland, dwarfing Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer by nearly 18 metres. The ceremony, led by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski, was scheduled on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and included a floral tribute described as a call to redirect people’s gaze from earthly concerns to divine ones. The statue’s placement in a remote field reflects the wishes of a local millionaire couple, while its unveiling comes amid a broader trend of declining Catholic influence, especially among young urban Poles. Even Poland’s former president Lech Wałęsa, a notable Catholic figure, attended the consecration, underscoring the enduring cultural significance of the monument.

A 55.6‑metre concrete representation of the Virgin Mary, touted as the tallest in Europe, was formally unveiled in the small village of Konotopie.

The monumental figure, standing 182 feet tall, surpasses Rio de Janeiro’s renowned Christ the Redeemer by almost 18 metres, though it remains shorter than the 98‑metre Virgin Mary in the Philippines.

The sculpture, placed in a field far from Poland’s population centres, was consecrated by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski during a ceremony held on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In a country where Catholicism is still predominant, the unveiling reflects a growing tension: younger urban Poles are increasingly turning away from traditional church practices while the church’s public influence slowly wanes.

Two helicopters circled above before dropping rose petals, and the statue’s open‑armed crown symbolised an invitation to lift one’s gaze toward God and heaven, according to Bishop Wętkowski.

Among those attending was former president and freedom‑fighter Lech Wałęsa, who historically linked his activism to his Catholic faith; he remarked that the Virgin’s presence at the event echoed his own spiritual journey.
