Dozens of people have been injured in an explosion during Friday prayers at a mosque inside a high school complex in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.
Fifty-four people were admitted to hospital, city police chief Asep Edi Suheri told a televised news conference, with the injuries ranging from minor to serious and including burns.
Authorities stated that three individuals suffered serious injuries while 17 others sustained minor injuries. Some people have already been treated and released from the hospital, according to local media reports.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the cause of the explosion at the site in Kelapa Gading, a district in North Jakarta, with a bomb disposal team deployed to search the area.
Images from the scene show bystanders watching as military personnel cordon off and guard the entrance to the state-run high school complex.
The explosion occurred around 12:15 local time (05:15 GMT), according to local reports.
A high-ranking Jakarta Metropolitan Police officer confirmed the discovery of two objects resembling firearms at the scene.
Images from Indonesia's government-owned news agency Antara suggest that one object appeared to be a submachine gun while another looked like a pistol.
The submachine gun-like object reportedly bore an inscription that read: 14 words. For Agartha. Additionally, another engraving referenced Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand.
A minister who visited the scene later on dismissed the suggestion that weapons were present, suggesting the items photographed were a toy gun, not a real gun. Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus urged the public not to speculate about the nature of the explosion, emphasizing that investigators are still assessing the scene.
Another object found at the site was a green belt for storing gun ammunition.
A pupil at the school claimed to Antara that a homemade bomb was brought in by a student who had frequently been bullied.
Indonesia is noted for having the world's largest Muslim population.
