The Sydney Swans have announced the suspension of five AFL players – Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice and James Jordon – for the remainder of the 2026 season.
The stand‑downs come after evidence emerging from the Victorian Police that the players were drinking late, brought women to a hotel following a weekend match in Melbourne, and the alleged sexual assault may have taken place in the early hours of Monday morning at the Pullman Hotel.
No player has been arrested or charged, and the investigation is ongoing. Nevertheless, club officials cite a breach of the Swans’ code of conduct in terms of alcohol limits and the inappropriate invitation of women to the hotel.
Club chairman Andrew Pridham appeared on a Wednesday news conference and apologised to fans, players and the broader community, stressing that the decisions were made independently of the police inquiry.
Chief executive Matthew Pavlich echoed this sentiment, calling the players “deeply embarrassed and ashamed” and expressing concern about the welfare of those involved. He declined to reveal whether drug testing had taken place, noting such inquiries belong to the police.
The AFL’s chief executive Andrew Dillon described the reports of a possible assault as “deeply concerning”. He clarified that the league does not impose automatic stand‑downs for serious offences; instead each case is assessed on a discretionary, case‑by‑case basis.
With the Swans currently ranked second on the ladder, the suspension of key talent comes at a crucial juncture before the club enters the qualifying and elimination finals. The team is scheduled for a final regular‑season match against North Melbourne at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which will precede the finals campaign.
Both Heeney and Warner are regarded as among the AFL’s brightest stars, and their absence will test the club’s depth and resilience.
