Video footage captured on a doorbell camera shows former Shelby Police Officer Karson Hyder repeatedly punching 34‑year‑old Cherrie Moore in the face, sparking a viral outcry.
Hyder, 22, turned himself in to the Cleveland County Detention Center on Monday and is being held on a $10,000 bond. Court records list no attorney for him and a phone number associated with his name is disconnected.
The incident occurred on Friday during a response to a breaking‑and‑entering call. It escalated when Moore fled the residence and resisted arrest, grabbing Hyder’s uniform. The confrontation culminated in the officer striking Moore twice in the face, as the warrant alleges. The blows have been described as serious, potentially causing a broken nose and a busted lip.
Following the video’s release, Shelby officials suspended Hyder the same day and terminated his employment on Saturday. A separate warrant filed Monday charged Hyder with unlawful assault, noting that he “unlawfully and willfully” struck Moore after grabbing her arm and pushing her to the ground.
Moore was initially charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest and assault on a public officer. The last two charges have since been dismissed. She was released on an unsecured bond. A phone number associated with her name is out of service, and her attorney—Ronald Haynes—has commented on her recovery and mental‑health treatment.
Haynes told the Associated Press that the “heinous actions of former Officer Karson Hyder will forever negatively impact Ms. Cherrie Moore and her family.” He added that “it’s a small relief that city officials responded so promptly to terminate and charge Mr. Hyder.”
On Saturday, the State Bureau of Investigation announced it had opened a formal investigation into Hyder’s conduct, underscoring the need for accountability and transparency in local law enforcement.
The incident has ignited discussions across the city about the treatment of officers who overstep their duties and the importance of clear and ongoing training for police personnel.
