Former Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal Convicted on Rape Charges
In a landmark decision, the Bombay High Court’s Goa bench found former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal guilty of raping a former colleague, overturning a 2021 acquittal and setting a precedent for accountability.
The court convicted Tejpal under sections covering rape and sexual harassment following allegations that he assaulted a woman in an elevator during a 2013 Tehelka event in Goa.
Tejpal, who has consistently denied the accusations, was earlier arrested and spent seven months in jail before the Supreme Court granted him bail. In 2021, a lower Goan court dismissed all charges, but the state government appealed, leading to the high‑court review.
The judge ordered that Tejpal be sentenced in the coming session on Thursday, while the defendant is expected to file an appeal in a higher court. The verdict was seen as a “clear message to society” that a “no means a no.”
Experts say this ruling could influence how sexual‑harassment cases are handled across India, offering victims a stronger recourse against powerful figures.
