Since 19 June, France has recorded 301 drownings – a 14% increase from the same period last year – according to Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari. The surge is linked to the country’s severe, prolonged heatwaves.

National leaders said many accidents happened in places not officially authorised or supervised for swimming, such as rivers and canals, and in private pools that lack safety measures.

Ferrari explained that the combination of heat‑induced exhaustion, sudden immersion in cooler water and over‑exertion can lead to fatal incidents, especially among older adults.

The French government is collaborating with regional authorities to improve designated swimming areas, install better safety signage, and launch public awareness campaigns.
