Greek politician’s mother dies after arson attack
\
\A 72‑year‑old woman connected to a New Democracy MP died from severe burns after an arson attack on a Thessaloniki apartment building where her daughter, candidate for parliament, lives.
\The attacks, occurring around 04:18, 04:23 and 04:35, were carried out with petrol bombs and other incendiary devices, police say. They targeted the homes of three party officials, including the daughter, a local committee chair and a former MP, but most were unharmed.
\Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the crimes, calling them “murderous and inhumane” and vowed to “banish terrorism.” Opposition figures also demanded swift justice.
\The Counter‑Terrorism Service has taken over the investigation. No group has claimed responsibility and the police are still searching for the suspects, believed to have moved on a motorcycle.
\The incident adds to a growing alarm about political violence in Greece, with officials warning that democracy must remain protected from criminal acts.
