Four people were killed when a private helicopter crashed near the small town of Sainte‑Brigide‑d'Iberville, about 50 kilometres north of Montreal, on Saturday afternoon.
Fire and rescue teams responded shortly after 14:30 local time. They found the aircraft engulfed in flames and declared the victims dead on scene. No identifications have been made yet.
The police officer on the scene, Sergeant Audrey‑Anne Bilodeau, said the helicopter was likely a private aircraft. Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec’s Major Crime Unit, together with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, are leading the inquiry.
The crash site is located near Rang des Écossais road off Highway 10. A call was made to police about a distressed helicopter that seemed to have crashed and caught fire. By 22:00 local time the fire had been brought under control, although investigators were still working at the site.
Given the lack of fatalities on board, the authorities anticipated that victim identification could take a few days.
