In brief

Kaesang Pangarep, son of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, faced backlash after a private jet trip to the USA that many see as contrary to his father's image of relatability, igniting debates about privilege and transparency in a country struggling with economic disparity.

In a turn of events that has marred the Everyman persona of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, controversy has erupted over his son Kaesang Pangarep’s luxurious travels. The incident began when Kaesang and his wife, Erina Gudono, shared a seemingly innocuous photo on social media during their flight from Jakarta to Los Angeles, captioned with “U.S.A. here we go.” However, it was the details of their overseas trip that ignited outrage among the Indonesian public.Erina's Instagram showcased extravagant treats, including a $25 lobster roll and a $1,500 stroller for their impending baby. Such displays of wealth were deemed insensitive at a time when many Indonesians struggle to afford basic necessities, prompting indignation online. The situation escalated as it was revealed that the couple traveled aboard a private jet, a stark contradiction to President Joko's carefully curated image as a man of the people. The aircraft was reportedly linked to Shopee, a major online retail operator preparing to establish a new building in Solo, President Joko’s hometown, and where his older son Gibran Rakabuming Raka was formerly mayor.Critics voiced their concerns over the implications of Kaesang's trip. Boyamin Saiman, a prominent figure in the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Community, pointedly questioned, "If Kaesang wasn’t the mayor’s brother who had signed an agreement with Shopee, would he really have been able to fly on Shopee’s private jet?"Kaesang has defended himself against accusations of impropriety, claiming he merely “hitchhiked” on a friend’s plane while withholding the friend’s identity. The Corruption Eradication Commission of Indonesia is currently investigating the incident to determine if there was any bribery involved. The ownership status of the jet remains ambiguous, with past links to Garena Online, a company associated with Shopee's parent organization, SEA Limited. As public scrutiny intensifies, this episode raises serious questions about nepotism, privilege, and the responsibilities of those in power and their families within the socio-economic landscape of Indonesia.
