A tsunami warning was issued for the coast but was withdrawn after three hours. Residents were urged to avoid damaged buildings and coastal areas as the national disaster agency worked to assess the full extent of the damage. At least five people have died after a 7.7‑magnitude earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara early on Saturday morning. The provincial governor, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, said the victims were killed in sleep by collapsing rubble.

Search and rescue teams have been combing damaged buildings and dealing with dozens of aftershocks, one reaching magnitude 6.1. A tsunami warning was issued but lifted three hours later.

The quake occurred just before 05:00 local time at a depth of 15 km, according to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Images from the port in Maumere show shattered concrete pouring over a ferry gangway, sending passengers into the sea. Motorbike‑laden crowds moved inland as authorities urged people to avert the coast.

"Residents should avoid entering damaged buildings and coastal areas," the national disaster mitigation agency BNPB advised. A rapid assessment is underway to verify casualties and the full reach of the destruction.

About 2,000 people in Nagekeo were evacuated, and many residents like Arnold Welianto of Talibura village chose to stay outside due to fear of ongoing aftershocks.
