In brief
The Villa Vie Odyssey, a 200‑metre cruise vessel, stopped operations in Cambodia as fuel costs surged from $1,800 to $8,000 per cabin in Asia. Roughly 200 passengers are now stranded while the operator works on disembarkation and temporary housing plans. The ship, designed for a 3½‑year circumnavigation, features luxury amenities including bars, restaurants, a pool deck and a pickleball court. Passengers like Holly Hennessey are waiting in local hotels, hoping the ship will resume sailing, while officials explore restructuring and recapitalisation over the next 60 days.
Luxury Cruise Hit by Fuel Price Chaos
A 200‑metre luxury cruise ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, stopped operations in Cambodia after fuel costs ballooned, leaving around 200 passengers stranded.
The US‑based operator said it was working on disembarkation plans and temporary housing, but the sudden jump in fuel – from $1,800 to up to $8,000 per cabin in Asia – made the route unsustainable.
Built for a 3½‑year circumnavigation, the ship’s 650‑cabin design includes bars, restaurants, a pool deck and even a pickleball court.
“We’re all in different hotels; there’s a number of shipmates in the hotel that I’m in. We’re just waiting,” said Holly Hennessey, a passenger who had “never imagined” being in Cambodia.
Officials are exploring restructuring and recapitalisation over the next 60 days, but no outcome is guaranteed.
