More than 600,000 people in the Kyiv region of Ukraine were without power on Saturday morning after an overnight Russian attack.

Ukraine's energy ministry stated that over 500,000 of these were in the capital, with others affected in surrounding areas. The power loss has been attributed to missile and drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure across the city and several other regions.

Reports indicated that around 36 missiles and nearly 600 drones were launched on various targets throughout Ukraine overnight, leading to three fatalities and numerous injuries.

As Ukraine heads into winter, Russia has intensified its attacks on civilian and energy infrastructures, disregarding the ongoing US-led efforts to negotiate a peace deal.

In a statement, Russia's defence ministry claimed the strikes were aimed at the Ukrainian military-industrial complex and related energy facilities.

After the attack, Dtek Energy reported that power had been restored to more than 360,000 families by Saturday night.

The bombardment also damaged several residential buildings, with loud explosions reported across Kyiv in the early hours. Emergency services responded to fires caused by the strikes.

Among those injured, Kyiv's Mayor Vitaly Klitschko mentioned a 13-year-old child, highlighting the impact on civilians.

The Ukrainian Air Force successfully shot down 558 drones and 19 missiles in the course of the attack.

Kyiv, along with several other cities, has continuously faced aerial bombardments since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

Regular power outages have become a reality for many Ukrainians, particularly targeting energy infrastructure during winter months.

As temperatures forecast to drop to 2C, the vulnerability of the civilian population increases, further aggravated by Russian attacks on energy resources, including oil tankers linked to sanctions evasion.

Negotiations between Ukraine and US officials are set to continue amid the ongoing violence, with both sides exploring avenues for peace amid the unyielding conflict.
