Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died in May 2026 following a drug‑related incident, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced. The physician‑pathologist's report cited the combined effects of heroin, cocaine and multiple prescription medications as the cause, ruling the death accidental.
Clarke, 29, was found unresponsive in a bedroom of a house in the San Fernando Valley on 11 May and was pronounced dead by paramedics. The medical examiner’s office said the final report would be released at a later date, while listing prescription drugs as a significant contributor, though the specific prescription substances were not disclosed.
The player, a first‑round draft pick in 2019, had played just two games in the 2025‑26 NBA season because of injuries. He finished his career with 309 NBA games, averaging 10.2 points per game and cementing himself as a respected teammate and community figure.
A month before his death, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on charges including speeding and possession of a controlled substance. The Grizzlies issued a heartfelt statement, saying they were “heartbroken” by the loss, noting he was an “outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”
Clarke was born in Vancouver and held dual Canadian‑American citizenship. He played college basketball at San Jose State and Gonzaga before being drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder and traded to the Grizzlies.
