Jonathan McKinsey, 40, served as The New York Times’ director of engineering for Games Player Experience. He was found dead in a car park beside Dublin Sports Grounds, 35 miles east of San Francisco, on Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses reported a sudden flurry of gunshots before seeing McKinsey collapse with multiple head and chest wounds. Police later arrested his wife’s parents, 77‑year‑old Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, who remain in custody on charges that include first‑degree murder, conspiracy, reckless discharge of a firearm, and child endangerment.
Authorities have not released a motive, but the couple were reportedly present at the scene after the shooting and were apprehended by a passing officer minutes later. The defendants are set to appear in court on Wednesday.
New York Times officials confirmed the death and noted that inquiries are ongoing. Justice proceedings will determine the outcome of the criminal case involving McKinsey’s tragic loss.
