In brief

In a pursuit to uncover the lessons and remnants of the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, journalist Azam Ahmed shares his experiences with the Taliban while navigating the complexities of the region’s tumultuous past.

In a quest to understand the ramifications of American actions in Afghanistan, I embarked on a journey back to a land fraught with contradiction and depth. The Taliban soldier appeared worn and weary within a hastily constructed outpost, situated on a snow-covered mountain pass. The trailer's crude structure housed an erratic wood stove, emitting smoke that punctuated the cold air.Upon noticing my presence, the soldier, clad in mismatched layers that hinted at neglect, instructed us to exit our vehicle. For what felt like an eternity, my colleague Bryan Denton and I remained seated on the trailer floor, the soldier scrutinizing our credentials. Nearby, his guards were cocooned in a pile of blankets, their fatigue evident, as the faint odor of unwashed bodies hung in the air.The soldier probed us with questions: Why were we in Afghanistan? Where were our travels leading us? What was the intent behind our visit? We fell back on our rehearsed responses, detailing my background as a correspondent for The New York Times and previously covering the Afghan war. My purpose was to gain insight into the lessons and hidden truths that had emerged post-U.S. intervention. Most Taliban members I previously encountered had approached me with a degree of warmth, or at least curiosity. With the support of several longtime contacts in Kabul, I felt reassured. However, this remote location felt different. Here, amidst the harsh conditions, suspicion simmered beneath the surface. As uncertainty settled in, Bryan and I exchanged glances filled with apprehension. My heart raced when one of the guards turned on his phone to record our interaction. The reality was stark; many foreigners in our predicament had faced severe consequences in similar situations throughout recent history. This experience underscored the precarious nature of journalism in conflict zones, where every moment can shift from mundane to perilous in an instant.
