Norway’s New King Hails Father in First National Speech
King Haakon VIII addressed the nation, paying heartfelt tribute to his late father, Harald V, who passed away at 89 after a battle with a rare blood condition. Seated at the royal palace’s desk, the new king expressed, “Thank you for being such a good dad,” with an emotional tone that resonated across Norway.
Harald V, known for modernising the monarchy and being affectionately referred to as a "people’s king," had reigned for 35 years. Haakon emphasized his father’s role as an excellent parent, a warm grandfather, and a loving husband, noting the significance of family unity during the king’s 58th wedding anniversary, which would have fallen on Saturday.
The speech underscored national unity: the royal family believes in a society built on law, justice, and equal value for everyone. Haakon pledged to act with vigilance and attentiveness, recognizing the "major task" ahead as a monarch.
