Pakistan Ex‑Prime Minister Imran Khan Back in Prison After Hospital Examination

After a Supreme Court order, former Pakistani leader Imran Khan was examined by a team of doctors in Islamabad and found medically fit to return to prison. The court had mandated a 48‑hour hospital assessment amid concerns about Khan’s health, including worsening vision and other conditions.

Khan’s legal team, led by Attaullah Tarar, described the doctors as an ophthalmologist, cardiologist, and general physician, all of whom reported that the former prime minister was in adequate health for incarceration.

This decision represents the most significant judicial relief Khan has received since his 2023 imprisonment on corruption charges, which he has labeled politically motivated. Court documents state that the prison authorities must guard the prisoner’s health, dignity and safety.

The Supreme Court also ruled that the Tehreek‑e‑Insaf party must refrain from staging news conferences or rallies outside the hospital, a measure meant to avoid politicising Khan’s medical stay.

Khan’s sister, Azma Khan, accompanied him throughout the overnight medical examination, underscoring the importance of family support during the process. Although his last verdict placed him back into prison, the move has drawn widespread attention to the treatment of high‑profile detainees in Pakistan.

Imran Khan’s case highlights broader concerns about the political use of the judiciary and the importance of ensuring transparent, humane conditions for all prisoners.
