ATLANTA (AP) — A man was arrested at Atlanta’s bustling airport on Monday after a family tip alerted police to his plan to commit a mass shooting, revealing the critical importance of community vigilance.

Billy Joe Cagle, 49, from Cartersville, Georgia, live-streamed his intent to attack the world’s busiest airport on social media. Cagle was described as a felon with access to an AR-15 and 27 rounds of ammunition found in his parked truck outside Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as police Chief Darin Schierbaum revealed during a news conference.

“We’re here today briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something,” noted Schierbaum, thanking the Cagle family for their timely alert.

Police surveillance captured Cagle arriving at the airport shortly before he was taken into custody. Officers approached him with a photo shared by family members, leading to the arrest. Body camera footage from the incident showed police grappling with a yelling Cagle before securing him in handcuffs.

Pursuant to his actions, Cagle faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a felon. His apprehension has initiated investigations to uncover how he acquired the firearm, which he was legally prohibited from possessing.

We’re thankful to God and to good information for this crisis being averted, stated Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, highlighting the pivotal role of community participation in public safety.

In light of the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for their swift action that prevented potential harm at a major transportation hub.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the collaborative efforts necessary to enhance public safety and avert tragedies through community alertness.
