Background of the Incident
During the opening days of the US‑Iran war, two Iranian Su‑24 fighter jets allegedly operated from a Qatari base. The jets were intercepted by Qatari air defences on 2 March 2026, resulting in the loss of one pilot and accusations of three others being held by Qatar.
Iran’s Letter to the ICRC
Brig‑Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh wrote to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Mirjana Spoljaric, accusing Qatar of violating international law and holding the pilots – Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian and Imran Behroshian – for six months without allowing contact with families.
The letter noted that the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, was returned after he was killed in the same operation on 2 March 2026.
Qatar’s Response
Qatar’s foreign‑affairs spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al Ansari rejected the accusation, stating the pilots violated Qatari airspace and that the country acted within international law. He said rescue teams searched extensively for casualties and coordinated handover of remains, but Iran had not yet responded to an invitation to review the operation.

The dispute underscores the fragile communication between the two sides and complicates efforts to resolve personnel status in the escalating conflict. Qatar continues to emphasize adherence to international norms while Iran calls for the pilots’ release in the name of humanitarianism.
