In brief
As the conflict in Gaza rages on, the blackout persists, turning everyday living into a relentless struggle for families in the region.
Mariam Abu Amra, a mother of six, describes the panic that engulfs her children when night falls. Living in Deir al-Balah, a town in central Gaza, her home is cloaked in darkness as the war has resulted in an uninterrupted blackout lasting over a year. With only cellphone screens providing meager light, families rely on dwindling battery life to navigate their lives.Since the conflict began, Israel has disrupted the electricity supply in an attempt to weaken Hamas, plunging the already beleaguered territory into deeper deprivation. Basic necessities, such as functioning medical devices and even simple lights, have become luxuries. “Every night is a struggle for us,” states Ms. Abu Amra, depicting the immense challenge of managing household tasks without electricity.Cooking, laundry, and family activities now revolve around the daylight, compelling Ms. Abu Amra to rise early. “I never realized how much I needed electricity until it was taken away,” she reflects, noticing the drastic changes in her family’s day-to-day life.Life under these conditions is fraught with anxiety and uncertainty. As Gazans continue to face profound hardships, the fight for basic rights, including access to electricity, remains overshadowed by the ongoing conflict, leaving families to wonder when — or if — their situation will improve.
