Moscow says Russian forces assisted Nigerien troops in repelling an attempted coup in Niamey. Russia says its African Corps helped Niamey forces repel a sudden coup attempt that began at dawn. The assault targeted a key military airbase and the presidential palace, sparking gunfire and explosions across the capital.

The Nigerien Ministry of Defence announced that the rebellion had been contained hours later, crediting Russian servicemen for assisting local troops. Moscow vows continued support against ‘extremists’, affirming that the legitimate government of President Gen. Abdourahmane Tiani is in control.

The African Corps, stationed at Air Base 101, has become a critical ally for the Sahel alliance – Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso – amid jihadist insurgencies. Yet the mutiny reveals growing instability within Niger’s own military ranks.

Security forces increased patrols around key sites, including the main airport entrance and presidential pavilion. While casualties remain undisclosed, the state broadcaster showed mutineers being arrested and commercial activity has resumed in Niamey.
