In brief
"Valerie, a dachshund who went missing on Kangaroo Island, has been rescued after 529 days of survival in the wilderness. Her owners are eagerly awaiting a reunion as she adjusts back to life at home."
Valerie, the miniature dachshund, embarked on an unexpected journey after disappearing from her owners on Kangaroo Island in November 2023. The spirited dog slipped out of her pen, leading to a 529-day saga of survival in the Australian bush. Despite numerous attempts by locals and rescuers to find her, Valerie evaded capture until a recent sighting gave hope to her worried owners.Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, Valerie's devoted owners, were visiting the scenic Kangaroo Island when their beloved pet vanished. The couple searched tirelessly for five days, but ultimately had to leave without her, heartbroken but hopeful. Over the next year, Valerie was spotted occasionally, and her resilience impressed everyone who heard about her.Recently, Valerie was located approximately 10 miles from where she had originally escaped, identified by the distinctive pink collar she wore at the time of her disappearance. Jared Karran from Kangala Wildlife Rescue, who played an instrumental role in the recovery effort, shared, "Finding her was a long and tough battle, but it was all worth it."Although Gardner described Valerie as "not a very outside, rough-and-tough dog," rescuers believe she managed to survive by drinking from natural water sources and scavenging for food, including plants and roadkill. Now safe and sound, Valerie is undergoing a process of re-acclimatization to familiar domestic life and is set to reunite with her relieved and elated owners soon. This remarkable story of endurance and survival has not only drawn the attention of the local community but has also inspired many others, shining a light on the bond shared between pets and their families.
