SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Pre-K 4 SA initiative in San Antonio is welcoming its inaugural class of infants and toddlers, signaling a new era of early education for the city's low-income families. This program is designed to provide free preschool for 2,000 slots, helping young children develop vital skills before they enter kindergarten.

Sandra Mosqueda, a local mother, shares her joy watching her 2-year-old son, Atreus, engaging with his surroundings through active learning and play, which she could not experience at his age. The early education her children receive forms a foundation that prepares them for future educational success.

The importance of the first five years of a child's life cannot be underestimated, as they have a lasting impact on their development. Despite nearly two-thirds of children across the U.S. being reported as ready for kindergarten, disparities remain, especially between low-income families and their wealthier counterparts. A recent survey shows a 20% gap in readiness between the poorest and richest children.

Programs like Pre-K 4 SA are crucial for leveling the playing field. Established in 2013 and financed through the city’s sales tax, this initiative offers a wide range of services to support the educational needs of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Its expansion to include infant and toddler classrooms last year additionally emphasizes the necessity for ongoing support during the early years.

The program's curriculum incorporates social-emotional skills alongside traditional learning methods. Students are engaged in activities like cooking to enhance their motor skills, showing that playful experiences are an integral part of their development.

However, demand is high, with over 1,600 families on the waitlist this past year. To address this, Pre-K 4 SA connects families with additional resources and local preschool options while other cities are also exploring financial aid to broaden access.

San Antonio's approach serves as a model for other cities aiming to ensure that high-quality education is accessible to all children, irrespective of income.

The drive to provide quality education while addressing socioeconomic challenges creates a brighter future for children, reaffirming that with the right support, families can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
