PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities in Rhode Island are escalating their search for the gunman responsible for a devastating shooting at Brown University that resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. In a bid to uncover key evidence, investigators have been canvassing neighborhoods, reviewing surveillance footage, and sifting through snow-covered areas for clues.

Newly released videos captured the suspect shortly before the incident, displaying a masked individual wearing a dark, two-tone jacket. These visuals provide a vital lead, although the suspect’s identity remains unknown.

The FBI has described the suspect as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build, announcing a substantial $50,000 reward for information that leads to the individual’s arrest and conviction. Providence's police chief, Col. Oscar Perez, emphasized the importance of community engagement in the investigation, urging those with information to come forward.

Over the weekend, police detained a person of interest; however, they later released him after determining that he was not connected to the crime. As a result, they renewed their focus on the original suspect, further frustrating a community already shaken by the violence.

Questions continue to swirl regarding the university’s security measures, particularly the adequacy of surveillance systems on campus. The investigation is compounded by the fact that the shooting occurred during finals week at Brown, heightening the sense of fear and insecurity among students.

In the wake of the tragedy, community members, educators, and students are grappling with the loss and the implications for campus safety. Governor Dan McKee has urged local police to increase their presence at schools to provide reassurance following the distressing incident.

A vigil honoring the memory of the victims, Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, is planned, bringing together the Brown community in a time of grief. The loss of these talented students, both committed to their studies and communities, underscores the tragic impact of gun violence on educational environments.
