A former teacher at a prominent Islamic boarding school in East Java was sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a female student in 2022.
However, a BBC Eye undercover investigation revealed he was secretly released on parole in August 2025, having served less than half his sentence. The victim, who was never notified of his release, cried with relief when she learned he had returned to jail.
The Indonesian Ministry of Migration and Corrections stated the early release was a procedural error. In response to public outcry, the government ordered a review, and the minister announced that officials responsible for approving the parole would face sanctions.
Bechi, the son of a well‑known Islamic cleric who founded the Shiddiqiyyah boarding school, had been arrested after a 15‑hour police siege. Although prosecutors sought a longer sentence, he was convicted on a lesser charge of sexual assault.
Victim advocates and civil society groups highlighted that authorities often hesitate to investigate abuse involving influential religious figures. Lawyers representing survivors spoke at parliamentary hearings, calling for transparent investigations and stronger protections for students.
