7 people killed, 40 injured in Ukrainian drone strike on Russian beach

A Ukrainian‑made drone hit a crowded beach near the village of Arkhipo‑Osipovka on Russia’s southern Black Sea coast, killing seven people—three children—and leaving 40 wounded, 17 of whom were taken to hospital, according to the governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev.

Video footage posted on social media, verified by the BBC, shows the drone descending toward a cliffside before crashing into an explosive fireball on the beachfront while tourists looked on from the shore and in the water. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire before the explosion, suggesting that Russian air‑defence units may have attempted to shoot the drone down.

Kondratyev accused Ukraine of “a deliberate strike on civilians”, while Ukrainian officials have not issued a statement. Both sides deny that civilians were targeted deliberately. It remains unclear what the drone was aiming at, though some Ukrainian Telegram channels claim the drone was jammed by electronic warfare, while others speculate it may have been misdirected.

The beach, located on the Black Sea, is a popular holiday destination in Russia, drawing tourists especially after sanctions have restricted international travel. In the days that followed the incident, no sirens were heard to warn of the attack. One holidaymaker noted seeing no clear view of the drone, while another was able to hear what described as “gunfire, like a machine gun”, followed by the explosion, and a third reported seeing children traumatized by the event.

The attack is part of a broader pattern of cross‑border strikes, with Ukrainian forces increasingly striking Russian territory and Russian forces continuing attacks on civilian areas. In recent weeks, Russian ballistic missiles have struck Kyiv, causing further civilian casualties, while Ukrainian strikes have targeted Russian warehouses and energy infrastructure.
